Build Faster With SawTek®

In the evolution of structural framing, the transition from manual on-site adjustments to automated precision is a critical factor in building efficiency. SawTek by Boise Cascade® and McCray Lumber & Millwork represents a specialized suite of automated processing solutions designed specifically for Engineered Wood Products (EWP).

By integrating advanced software with high-speed cutting technology, SawTek addresses the technical challenges of modern floor and roof framing.

The Integration of Software and Hardware

The core of the SawTek system is the seamless communication between design software and the cutting floor. This digital-to-physical workflow eliminates traditional “measure-and-mark” errors that can compromise structural integrity.

  • Direct File Integration: Precision cutting instructions are pulled directly from BC Framer® design files. This ensures that every joist and beam is cut to the exact specifications required by the structural engineer’s model.
  • Optimized Material Usage: The system’s algorithms calculate the most efficient way to cut components from stock lengths, significantly reducing job-site waste and environmental impact.

Technical Capabilities: Holes, Marks, and Precision Cuts

Beyond simple length cutting, SawTek provides high-definition processing that simplifies the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) phases of construction.

  • Automated Hole Cutting: The system can pre-cut holes for HVAC, plumbing, and electrical runs at the factory level. Because these holes are positioned based on the structural design, they are guaranteed to stay within the allowable “web-hole” zones specified by building codes.
  • Precision End-Trimming: Square, accurate cuts ensure that load-bearing members sit flush against headers and hangers, maximizing load transfer and reducing the “floor squeaks” associated with uneven gaps.
  • Pre-Marking and Labeling: Each piece is digitally ink-jet labeled with its location in the framing plan. This “kitting” process transforms a pile of lumber into a sequenced assembly kit, drastically reducing the time required for layout and installation.

Structural Integrity and Consistency

Engineered Wood Products like I-joists and Versa-Lam® LVL require specific handling to maintain their rated performance. SawTek is calibrated specifically for these materials.

  • Non-Destructive Processing: The cutting and drilling speeds are optimized to prevent splintering or micro-fractures in the wood fibers, preserving the shear and moment capacities of the EWP.
  • Uniformity Across the Project: Manual cutting often introduces slight variances across a floor system. SawTek ensures that every joist is identical, resulting in a flatter, more stable subfloor surface that is less prone to deflection or “bounce.”

Enhanced Job-Site Safety and Efficiency

By shifting the most labor-intensive and dangerous cutting tasks to a controlled, automated environment, SawTek improves the overall workflow of a construction project.

  1. Reduces On-Site Sawing: Minimizing the use of hand-held saws on-site lowers the risk of injury and the accumulation of sawdust waste.
  2. Faster Framing Cycles: Because components arrive pre-cut and labeled, framing crews can focus on assembly rather than fabrication, leading to faster dry-in times and reduced labor costs.
  3. Precision in Complex Designs: For modern homes with non-linear footprints or complex loading requirements, the precision of SawTek ensures that complex intersections fit together with zero-tolerance accuracy.
